Choosing a name for your program
Tuesday, November 10, 2009
Looks like people around Empathy (a Linux instant messaging program) didn’t do their homework before choosing a name for their software. It so happens that Empathy (my software for password protection of executable files) has the same name.
Now who was first? First version of my Empathy went public in August 2003. First version of their Empathy shipped around April 2007. Too bad I didn’t get a trademark. I could be practicing my legalese by writing a nice cease and desist letter now :).
On the other hand – choosing Empathy as a name for a piece of software is an inherently bad idea. You should always choose a name where you can guarantee a google search for the name will throw your website on position 1. Not easy to do with a generic word.
Well, I was 17 when I came up with that name. You learn by your own mistakes.

Empathy is not open source so I don’t give out the source code, sorry. You can use PE-inject (in the programming section of my web) to make similar software, though.
I don’t currently work for Microsoft as I am still a student. But I will be joining Microsoft fulltime next year, after I finish the school.
